Troubleshooting |
DDay has some known bugs that often require simple solutions. Not always do you know what to do and hopefully this page will help you in your quest of DDay pwning.
Q. The game crashes after x amount of time or the game crashes when a certain map is loaded. |
A1. It could be that you are using software mode. Try changing this in the Video menu, then selecting OpenGL instead of Software. Press "escape" or the Apply button to apply these settings.
Actually, software mode was developed by Id software because back in the days of Q2 not everyone had OpenGL cards which were, for that time, extremely fast cards.. |
A2. If that 'certain map' is wake (and some others) it has to do with how the map is made. Wake causes lag and framedrops with everybody and on older machines this map can cause a disconnect. There isn't really a fix, besides a new 'ent' file made by Fafner, but since this is server side there isn't much you can do. |
A3. Your computer may be overheating due to the immense and submersive graphics Quake2 has to offer. Well, this one shouldn't occur as much as the others but an overheating PC can cause framedrops and eventually lockups. |

Q. The "attack" button doesn't work anymore and instead it says something very offensive. What happened? |
A1. There is only 1 answer to this question: you have been "stuffed". Stuffing means someone can change your buttons. Only server admins can do this and they sometimes do this instead of kicking you. This problem can also expand due to the fact that Quake2 saves your settings when you exit the game.
Therefor I advise this: start a new game on your own (this means you need to start DDay, open the console (with the ~ button (or the ³² button on azerty)) and write "map dday2" without the quotes). When the map is loaded start editing the settings and when everything is perfect, leave the game. Everything is normally saved now. Now don't start hitting the servers yet! First open your Quake2/dday folder and change the file config.cfg and autoexec.cfg to read-only (for windows: right-click the file, select Properties and check "Read-only").
You could also move some things to a personal config file. Just create a new file and give it your nickname and the ".cfg" extension. For example: "inferno.cfg". In your autoexec.cfg you need to add a line at the bottom which says, with my example, "exec
inferno.cfg", without the quotes. This then always loads my personal config.
All these measurements don't really prevent stuffing, but when you exit the game now, the stuffs won't be saved anymore! With your new personal config it is also easier to change that stuffed button back to firing by opening the console and typing, using my example again, "exec inferno.cfg", without the quotes. This loads the correct firing button back to normal and you can shoot again.
If you don't have a personal config you can always go to the menu and select Options, Controls and change that attack button manually. This can also be done via the console with the command "bind mouse1 +attack"
If you want a personal config file and you're not sure how to make one, you can always ask on the DDay forums! |

Q. I can't connect to a server. |
A1. You could be banned from the server. Being banned from a server means you are not allowed to play there because you didn't follow the rules. If you are banned a message will appear in the console saying that you have been banned. If you are not sure why you are banned or it if it was a mistake: ask on the forums! |
A2. There might be a problem with your internet connection. DDay doesn't require anything special to play although it uses port 27910 as a standard port. If you don't know what a port is and how you can open it then you shouldn't be messing with this in the first place. Ask your system administrator, parents or local geek for help.
Note: some servers use a different port e.g. 27911, 27912 etc. |
A3. The server might be full. Most servers have a capacity of 8, 12 or 16 players (this can differ), if these slots are filled you can't join the server and you must wait until someone leaves. As DDay is an old game you won't see this too often, although it can occur from time to time. |

Community Info |
Himmy's server went offline, unfortunately, this time it will stay offline. Himmy rented the server and considering the small community it was time to let go.
For your information, COOLnet and dday.mine.nu are still fully functional!
